Genetic factors are known to be involved in multiple disease processes affecting man and are the focus of intense research. In periodontics, emerging evidence suggests that disease susceptibility and treatment outcomes may be subject to genetic pressures. The inflammatory mediator, interleukin-1 (IL-1) has been proposed to be a genetic marker for disease activity in the periodontium. In this regard, commercial genetic testing, new investigations and controversy regarding the role of genetic factors has surfaced. Moreover, an association between smoking, genetics, and disease severity has been established. In order to make an educated assessment of genetic influences on the periodontium and to discuss these findings with patients, clinicians must be familiar with the role of genetics in the etiology and treatment of periodontal disease including the use of dental implants.
