TemporoMandibular Dysfunctions (TMDs)

Understanding – Identification – Treatment

By Jean-Daniel Orthlieb
Armelle Manière-Ezvan, Anne Giraudeau, Diwakar Singh, Jean-Philippe Ré

Here are the TemporoMandibular Dysfunctions (TMDs) Understanding – identification – Treatment. Behind this term hides all myoathropathies of the masticatory apparatus, a functional disorder very frequently observed, but often poorly understood, poorly treated or on the contrary overtreated.

Polystructural, multifunctional, the masticatory apparatus is complex. A tridimentionnal etiopathogenic model with mechanical (Axe I), psychological (Axe II) and biological (Axe III) create sometime some confusions and prohibit overly simplistic binary concepts. At present, based on broad knowledge, consensual clarifications have emerged.

Clarification is the goal; clarification means the action of making a statement or situation less confused and more comprehensible; clarification is the opposite of confusion. Diagnosis is the key of successfully treatment, Diagnosis is often confusingly presented and then the care approach is not efficient.

The objective of this book is to serve optimization of daily practice:

  1. – defining simple and proven diagnostic procedures;
  2. – explaining how to stimulate the important adaptive capacities of the manducatory apparatus;
  3. – facilitating the understanding of new therapeutic approaches which are far from the usual overly invasive treatments;
  4. – acting only wisely on dental occlusion without it being the necessity of a specialist.
